The Civil war had profound effects on the the United States and the Confederacy in economic, political, and social. The war had different effects depending on the region which can be divided by effect on the south, north, and west. Each had similarities and differences in the way they were influenced by the war.

North

Republican congress:
- Homestead act of 1862: Any one can claim up to 160 aces of land. Then after 5 years of living on the land they can buy it
for a small fee
- Morill Land grant 1862: Set public land aside for education
- Tariff Bills : Highest tariffs will protect the Unions growing industry.
- Railway: Will complete the transcontinental railroad
- National Bank act: Banks that join will receive Federal treasury bank notes. takes away the chaos from the current treasury system
reinforcement of executive power
-Lincoln refused to acknowledged the Confederacy as a country. war was never declared by congress.
Abolishment of slavery
-1st Confication acts
-2nd Emancipation Proclamation
-3rd 13th amendment
Foreign countries backed up of the Union becosue the agreed with the abolishment of slavery

Economic

Boom in industry
Inflation due to paper money

Social

Social change in gender roles
women took positions as..
- teachers
-nurses
-factory workers
-took over family business
Some people became hostel toward African Americans because they blamed them for the war. New York city draft riots.
Run away slaves were free if they joined the Union army.
-lots fought and died in the war
-were used for a manual labor

West

Political

Most of the west belonged to the Union and was effected politically the same as the North. Like wise the small part of the west that belonged to the Confederacy was effected politically the same as the south.

Economic

Tariff bills protection for industry
Strengthened ties between the agricultural west and the the north east
transcontinental rail road
-easily moved goods
-help add to the already existing economic boom and strengthen ties to the east

Social

continued settlement of the west
-Homestead act of 1862
women took over jobs as men went off to war
-teachers
-nurses
-factory workers
-took over family business
-work farms

South

Political

the confederacy created a government that is identical to the us but they put great emphasis on states rights.
the confederacy had great issues getting any thing done states that didn't agree with something just refused participate. Made the federal government very weak.
- Organization for war chaotic
-states didn't give money to federal government that was requestel
- some states set up their own army's

Economic

the Souths economy took a great hit because of the war.
the south could no longer supply the North with cotton, its main cash crop.
it became increasingly difficult to export goods due to the naval blocked imposed by the north.
very small amounts of hard currency only have what had been taken from union treasuries
Huge amounts of inflation due to large amounts of worthless paper currency printed to finance the war

Social

Free slaves
women taking over normally male dominated positions.
women took over farms
- learned how to work the land them self's
-managed slaves
-teachers
-nurses
Developed southern nationalism
